Top Country Stories - September 6, 2013

» Drinks All Around: If you've heard his new single "Drinks After Work," and you probably have, you've got a good idea what to expect from Toby Keith's next album titled ... wait for it ... Drinks After Work. With titles like "Shut Up And Hold On," "Last Living Cowboy" and "Show Me What You're Working With," it's a safe bet plenty of fun times will be had. On the other hand, if you pick up the 13-track deluxe edition, you'll also find a song called "Chuckie's Gone." And if you read the liner notes, you'll find a page that reads, "This album is dedicated in memory of Chuck Goff, our longtime bandleader-bass player. He will live on forever in our thoughts and in our performances. We miss ya, Shmudlo." Goff died in an automobile accident Feb. 27 after serving 25 years on the road with Keith. Sounds like a good reason to raise a glass.

» Kickoff Keith: "We love watching a lot of football games," says Keith Urban as he prepares to not only watch, but perform at the NFL Kickoff 2013 Thursday (9/5) on NBC-TV. "Certainly, from all of the years I've lived in Nashville, I've become a very passionate Titans supporter," he explains. As far as his favorite player, he says, "We love [Titans running back] Chris Johnson." Keith's relationship with the league goes beyond this year's opener between the Ravens and Broncos. "We've certainly done a lot of shows now with the NFL," he says. "We did a party for the Super Bowl, and of course we did the half-time show for the Thanksgiving game down in Dallas, which was a lot of fun. And we did a kickoff in New York a couple of years back, too, with Usher and Natasha Beningfield. I'm grateful we get to go back and be a part of it in Baltimore."

» Axe Man: If you watched Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift and Keith Urban perform "Highway Don't Care" during April's ACM Awards, you probably didn't realize the hit almost caused a hit. "When I finish that song, I throw my guitar in the air and I don't know where I'm throwing it," Keith tells Country Countdown USA With Lon Helton. Guitars don't fly away when you throw them, as Keith explains "Afterwards, Tim came over and said, 'Man I felt the wind of your guitar neck in the hairs of my ears. You came so close to knocking my head off at full speed with your guitar neck.'" Keith couldn't believe what a stunning accident he almost caused. "I was just terrified how close it came to smacking him in the head at full speed ... which would have been a great TV moment, and knowing Tim, he would have just held up the rock & roll sign."

» Cowboys Like Us: George Strait will serve as honorary captain for the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night (9/8) during the coin toss prior to their contest against the New York Giants at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. The following day, Strait will hold a press conference from the stadium about his 2014 The Cowboy Rides Away Tour that will stream live here and here at 11am CT (9/9). Strait headlined the first event held in the 105,000-capacity venue, which opened in 2009.

» Fishing Lines: "Fishing is supposed to be fun," says Blake Shelton to sad-beard Adam Levine in a new promo for The Voice. Levine confesses his mind is elsewhere as they join in on Peaches & Herb's "Reunited." Before you know it the band is back together and you totally forget Usher and Shakira ever existed. Season five, featuring coaches Shelton, Levine, Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green, begins Sept. 23 on NBC-TV. Watch here.

» Pitch Perfect: Former high school pitcher and American Idol winner Scotty McCreery will donate $50,000 to various youth baseball programs with money raised from his six-city Major League Baseball Tour. The series of ballpark shows began Aug. 29 in Tampa Bay and will continue throughout September. More here.

» Front Rose Seats: Maggie Rose sings "Get Ya Game On" for Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic's coverage of  Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens games throughout the 2013 NFL season. The song will be heard during pre-game shows Redskins Kickoff and Ravens Kickoff, Redskins Postgame Live, Ravens Postgame Live and various promotional content. Watch the video here.

» Almost Famous: ABC-TV's country music drama Nashville will face some real-life competition this fall as A&E (the television network responsible for Duck Dynasty) has ordered eight episodes of Crazy Hearts: Nashville. The hour-long reality show will follow the lives of aspiring country music artists as they work towards personal and career success. There is no premiere date set, but production is already underway and if things get slow, maybe they can arrange a cameo by Uncle Si.
